3D printed corset|Xeudi Chen, Pedro G.C. Oliveira

In the current age of growing cyber crime, where identity thefts, cyber bullying and stalkings are becoming more and more common, the design explores the very important concept of unrestricted data flows accorded by modern technology which often grants more access than required. A user’s nonchalance regarding data collected by a host of applications often leads to over sharing of information to the extent that nothing remains private, from the users locations and to what the he or she may be doing at that specific moment. In this daring comparison between transparency of information and actual nudity, the designer exhibits a corset with variable transparency.Consisting of a 3D printed flexible mesh with panels in between which represent the neighborhoods the wearer frequents, it is synced with an app which monitors data collection at same. Every time data is collected, the app causes the panel to corresponding location to pulsate to warn the user and subsequently turn more and more transparent. Thus, the analogy of personal data being akin to clothes and how unconsciously shared data leaves us more vulnerable is given life.
