When it comes to airports, most of you have a sad story to tell. You all remember when you had to wait for that one special bag at the luggage carousel for centuries. You remember when you missed a connecting flight or your flight was delayed and you had to go through a long layover that bored you to tears.
Today, airports are essential for you to reach a long-distance destination. But what if the airport IS your destination? Could this ever be possible? You decide after you check out our 8 airports that will blow your mind!
8. Agatti Airport, Lakshadweep, India
Based on the small – yet stunning – island of Lakshadweep, the airport lays comfortably amid Indian ocean.
Agatti airport is awfully connected to its context, especially due to the 1200 m long runway that merges into the sea. During landing, it almost looks like you would splash into the water, and you would if the pilot makes a slight error of a meter or two. There are plans to extend the runway but the airport continues to operate day and night; hats off to the Indian pilots!
7. Courchevel Altiport, France
Courchevel Altiport started operating in 1961 at a mountainous ski resort in France. The airport not only architecturally fits its surroundings but also conceptually; just as you enjoy skiing in the bumpy terrain around, you swing over the wavy runway as you clear for take-off.
That’s right! The runway has bumps! Plus, it is only 537 m long! Wait, there’s more… The airport is based 1800 m above sea level. So, who’s up for a roller-plane ride?
6. Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport, Dutch Caribbean island of Saba
At number 6, we’ve got special Caribbean airlines for you. Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport is famous for its shortest runway in the world. Aye aye, it’s only 400 m in length with the Caribbean Sea at both ends.
The plane makes a sharp 180 degrees turn at the edge of the runway to get ready for take-off. You know you’re in for an experience of a lifetime!
Take a look:
5. Barra Airport, Scotland
Just when you thought things couldn’t get any more thrilling, we bring to you a Beach Airport. Seriously, how fitting it is for an island to have its shore for an airport. Barra Airport is voted to be the world’s most stunning approach at privatefly.com
The airport has 3 runways marked on a shallow bay where a few high tides could ‘drown’ them. Thus, the flights are arranged according to tide size. You also get to have a mind-blowing landing with mountainous scenery around you.
Side note: Be cautious when you go for surfing, ‘cause a plane might be heading your way.
4. John Travolta’s Airport Home, Florida, USA
And now, with a great round of applause, we present to you an airport house!
This is where actor and aviator John Travolta lives with his wife. The front yard has parking garages for 5 jet planes.
“It was always John’s dream to have planes in his front yard—to practically be able to pull up to the house—so that when you wanted to go to dinner, all you’d have to do was step out the door, get on the plane and whisk off,” – Kelly Preston, the wife of John Travolta
Gotta appreciate John’s passion for aviation. Make sure you wave back to him with a smile as he drives through his driveway a.k.a. 2300-meter-long runway.
3. Tenzing Hillary Airport, Lukla, Nepal
Tenzing Hillary Airport is situated… ahem… is a part of Himalayas mountains. It is literally carved out of a 2804-meter-high mountain with its 460-m long runway to the edge of the cliff.
If you ever want to climb Mount Everest, this is the flight you would take. Who knows, you might find the landing more adventurous than the mountain climbing itself.
Tenzing Airport has the steepest runway at a gradient of 12% north to south. To top it, the weather over there is highly unpredictable – you can have prevailing winds and fogs in a matter of seconds. Yet, it is the busiest airport in Nepal!
2. Princess Juliana International Airport, Caribbean island of Saint Martin
At number 2, we have passenger-filled jets landing above cars and people. Princess Juliana International Airport is based in St. Martin on the Dutch side of the Caribbean.
In this case, you do not have to be the pilot or the passenger to get awestruck by the experience. You can simply be a guy sitting at the beach under an umbrella as the plane scrapes over it.
One end of the runway is very close to the Maho beach so the Jets get as low as 20 m above the beach folks. You can go closer to wave to the passengers. Just be careful… ‘cause the plane might hit you and knock you out!
1. Jewel Changi Airport, Singapore
Finally, we bring to you an airport filled with delight. Safdie Architects’ Changi Airport in Singapore tops the mind-blowing airports’ list for combining outdoors, indoors, nature, and marketplace in a fascinating setup! It has over 3000 retail shops and free movie theaters. This is where you’d wish your flight was delayed.
You don’t have to fly to/from there, you can just enjoy 1000 butterflies fly around you. The rain forest-themed butterfly garden forms the main center of attraction at the Changi airport. If you get butterflies in your stomach, you’ve got all sorts of food waiting for you in a sun-lit flourish garden. Believe me, this airport has plenty of swag!
