The Octagon’s Design Concept

At Grün Resort Uluwatu, the commitment to coexist harmoniously with nature rather than imposing on it is evident. Prayoga Arya, the Lead Architectural Designer at Stilt Studios, shares the team’s enthusiasm for creating a substantial restaurant and shared space with The Octagon that fosters a strong connection with the lush forestry environment.
Designed with adaptability, The Octagon caters to diverse functions and evolving needs. Its lower floor spans 140 sqm and serves as the resort’s restaurant, while the open-plan 200 sqm upper floor allows seamless transitions between spaces, accommodating various activities and interactions. Whether used as an office, a yoga class venue, or an event space, The Octagon effortlessly morphs to meet the demands of its occupants, ensuring long-term relevance and promoting a sustainable and vibrant living environment.

The upper floor of The Octagon features a pilotis concept, seemingly dancing lightly above the ground. Large glass sliding doors, a circular skylight at the center, and strategically placed notches invite breathtaking views of the surrounding forest, infusing the interiors with natural light and establishing a seamless connection with nature. The open-plan concept, combined with low, laid-back furniture, enhances the airy and spacious feel, promoting a sense of tranquility and oneness with the environment.

Moreover, an expansive decking system encircles the upper floor, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living. Guests stepping onto the decking are treated to a mesmerizing 360-degree panorama of captivating vistas. This unique experience is available not only to Grün Resorts Uluwatu guests but also to walk-in visitors seeking to immerse themselves in the resort’s enchanting ambiance.

The Octagon’s façade exhibits an exquisite fusion of glass, steel, and reclaimed wood, adding a tropical and industrial charm to its appearance. Incorporating steel not only imparts contemporary elegance but also ensures durability and recyclability.
Reclaimed wood complements this design, evoking a sense of history and authenticity while embodying sustainability by reducing the demand for new timber. Together, these materials create a visually captivating and environmentally responsible architectural masterpiece.

Adhering to Stilt Studios’ ethos of “lightening the impact on earth,” The Octagon utilizes prefabricated building elements and a conscious approach to select responsibly-sourced materials. The extensive use of wooden materials serves as a carbon storage means, further contributing to the structure’s eco-friendly nature. In addition to optimizing the construction process and reducing waste through prefabrication, Stilt Studios saves time and minimizes the carbon footprint during the construction phase.
