Stefano Boeri Architetti Unveils A Museum For Everyone

Stefano Boeri Architetti, a renowned architectural firm, has won a contract to design the Culture CBD Modern Technology Experience Centre in Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi province, China. The upcoming museum, which will focus on technology, is set to become a significant venue for promoting scientific and cultural discussions. The winning proposal takes inspiration from Xi’an’s natural landscape, characterized by a complex network of rivers and mountains and the city’s rich historical heritage.

The new museum, designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti, is located between an urban park to the north and a city street to the south. Its aim is to provide an open and welcoming environment that encourages visitor engagement and fosters a harmonious flow of public areas, enhancing the district’s overall appeal.

The museum’s north-facing facade features curved elements adorned with vertical metal rods. In contrast, the southern facade is made of horizontal slats created from high-performance concrete (GRC) reinforced with glass fibers.

Stefano Boeri has designed the structure to feature an extensive range of terraces. These terraces allow visitors to explore the premises while enjoying breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding area. These green terraces are seamlessly integrated into the museum’s programming and are designed to host various cultural activities, including screenings, shows, and performances. The selection of greenery is carefully curated to highlight local plant species, such as Ginko Biloba, Acer Pictum, and Pinus Bungeana, contributing to the site’s natural ambiance and showcasing the region’s biodiversity.

Stefano Boeri Architetti has organized the museum’s interior into four primary exhibition spaces, a temporary exhibition area, and various commercial zones. These distinct areas are interconnected and accessible via the double-height atrium. The design prioritizes accessibility and usability throughout the museum’s circulation flows, adhering to the principles of “Design for All.” To reflect the chromatic essence of digital arts and design, a vibrant and saturated shade of blue has been selected for the main public areas and exhibition spaces. This choice highlights significant elements within the space and aligns with the continuation of land artworks in the park.
