At its core, this structure embodies the joint research efforts of the Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture (IntCDC) from the University of Stuttgart and the Living, Adaptive and Energy-autonomous Materials Systems (livMatS) from the University of Freiburg. Together, they forge a pioneering path toward sustainable architecture by unifying design and construction practices.
The building achieves an architectural harmony previously unattained by weaving the distinct research paradigms of both Excellence Clusters. The livMatS Biomimetic Shell takes center stage, asserting its commitment to sustainability with a remarkable 50% reduction in environmental life cycle impact compared to traditional timber structures.

livMatS Biomimetic Shell’s Design Concept

The ingenuity of the segmented timber shell construction lies in its full de-constructibility and reusability. This feat owes its success to the convergence of computational design methods, robotic prefabrication, automated construction processes, and novel human-machine interactions within timber construction.

Nestled within this wooden expanse is the “Solar Gate,” an expansive skylight that mirrors nature’s wisdom by regulating indoor climate through a biomimetic, energy-autonomous 4D-printed shading system. This and a recycled concrete-activated floor slab ensure year-round comfort with minimal reliance on building services.
