Garden Bridge | AMBi Studio

Lets imagine for a moment that bridges weren’t just a simple way to safely transverse from one place to another, whether it’s over water or in a bustling urban district, and instead were seen as journeys. Unique in this mindset, the Garden Bridge by AMBi Studio located in Banciao City, Taiwan, allows the structure to be influenced by the user experience. The movements of the pedestrians dictate the undulating steel body of the bridge, making how they move through the space is just as important as arriving to their destination.

The original concept for the bridge was influenced by water and whirlpools, as it flows from one point to another in a simple curved motion emphasized by its structural steel skeleton. The bridge appears to widen and contract, accentuating points of interest for momentary pauses, reflections, or just beautiful views to appreciate the scenery. The veranda helps in this endeavor as well, only partially covering the walkway while strategically directing attention towards popular sites nearby.

The moments where the bridge touches the ground and the stairs leading into the structure provide the beginning of the journey. Once the end is reached the pedestrian is then rewarded with an amazing over look view of the city that only highlights the relationship between the bridge and the streets below. Even at night the bridge is well designed with the user in mind, creating a new experience as light sculptures integrated into the bridge illuminate the journey, allowing it to be both safe and mystical at the same time. With the roar of the cars below, and constant views of the city, the possibilities provided by this bridge are almost endless because it’s not just a walkway; it’s a social destination.
