The Pavilia Farm: A New Urban Farm Concept Presented by Snøhetta in Hong Kong

With its urban farm concept, Snøhetta comes to Hong Kong, bringing green spaces right into the center of the busy city. The project, designed for Tai Wai’s The Pavilia Farm residential complex, comprises three clubhouses that promote social engagement and create a community space where residents may exchange stories, unwind, and engage in urban farming in a communal garden. In other words, Pavilia Farm aims to invite passersby to temporarily abandon the condensed city that surrounds them and give in to the benefits of agriculture by bringing people closer together and closer to nature in the center of the densely populated city.

“The Pavilia Farm project serves as a reminder of the significance of developing new, green urban areas. We need to develop in a way that can make it ecologically sustainable as more people are living in cities than ever before. That trend is likely to continue in the upcoming years”. Noted Robert Greenwood, Partner and Managing Director of Snøhetta Asia.

Pavilia Farm as a haven of simplicity and peace:

Snøhetta created three small dwellings to serve as sacred sites of serenity and tranquility in the center of swarming Hong Kong in honor of the stunning landscape of the mountains and the Shing Mun River. The project aims to inject some amusement into urban life and improve citizens’ quality of life, both young and old.

The first two of the three clubhouses, dubbed “The Tea House” and “The Farm House,” have been opened, while the third, entitled “The Sky House,” is scheduled to be finished at the end of 2023. However, all three clubhouses adhere to the same principle of bringing green blooms to the urban environment and living in the moment. Still, each one serves a distinct purpose for the neighborhood.

In a perfect description of the Pavilia Farm, Snøhetta pointed “Creating locations and settings that belong to the community and can bind people together is something we thrive at Snøhetta, especially spaces that simultaneously belong to everyone and no one. The Tea House and The Farm House symbolize these concepts through this project and produce a green lung in the heart of throbbing Hong Kong. A place where all occupants can unwind and find tranquility while interacting and connecting”.

Pavilion Farm’s three clubhouses

First up is The Tea House, which intends to serve as both a launching point and an uplifting experience, allowing visitors to leave the busy metropolis behind and rise into peacefulness. The structure features a waterfall on one side and an indoor pool on the other. The Teahouse’s soothing background melody, which calms the mind and slows the pace, is inseparably infused with the sound of the falling water.

Secondly, The Farm House, in contrast to the reflective Tea House, is a place where people can socialize while bringing the farm to the building. The Farm House is the focal point of Pavilia Farm as it’s encircled and surrounded by the urban farm and its harvest. Architects employed the rail-bound table concept to unite the community and foster shared experiences.

This rail-bound table serves as a center of attention for discussions, laughs, and family time, much like a dining table in a home. Residents prepare and consume the food they have gathered at the Farm House table while interacting and exchanging experiences. In other words, The Farm House’s central gathering place is the table, and by utilizing food and natural resources, the Farm House itself fosters a sense of close-knit community.
