World’s Largest Green Roof

Architect Rafael Viñoly along with landscape architects OLIN has designed a project that features a 30 acre green roof top. ‘The Hills of Vallco’ will serve as a community park and a natural hotspot in Cupertino, California. When built, this will be the world’s largest green roof and Cupertino’s largest community park. This $3 billion project will replace the existing Vallco shopping mall in Silicon Valley which has been failing to attract public for quite some time now.

The green rooftop will have a network of 3.8 miles of walking and jogging trail along with playgrounds, organic gardens, orchards, recreational spaces and amphitheater. Native plants on the roof are intended to attract wildlife. The building below will house upto 800 apartments and 185,000 square metres of office space, a new shopping centre , a cinema, bowling lanes, an ice rink and gym.

The Hills at Vallco will achieve platinum certification from LEED for growing native plants, reducing energy consumption, recapturing rain water, providing natural light and ventilation, reducing pollution levels and increasing heat insulation in the building.
