THE MINIMUM MONUMENT PROJECT NÈLE AZEVEDO

These charming ice sculptures of hundreds of figures, are the vision of Brazilian artist Nèle Azevedo. Lovingly hand placed onto the concrete steps of Custom House in Belfast, the thousands of ice sculptures pay a profound and touching tribute to the thousands of people who lost their lives on the Titanic in 1912.

Crowds of people watched the 1,517 fifteen inch figures slowly melt from the heat of the day, and disappear into water, reflecting the same number who froze in the icy waters somewhere in the Atlantic ocean 100 years ago. A poignant and emotive installation with a truly admiral message behind it; I find the amount of effort and thought behind this work honourable, and beautifully, yet profoundly, highlights the fragility of life.
