Malevolent technology| Brookstones Spy Bot

Using an ipod or Iphone, you can now manoeuvre this small rover bot throughout your house or workplace to capture live video and audio feed. The bots are even capable of using infra-red, to see in the dark. Such devices could be used just as easily with extreme distances between them, for example someone in China could quite easily explore the streets of Paris.

However the potential to disconnect ones actions from the confines of their bodies is perhaps more scary than interesting. It gives the potential for actions to be taken with relative ease of uncovering those who behind them. Our society has forgone in the last couple of decades, dramatic reductions in privacy either unwillingly through such surveillance technologies as security cameras or willing through social media.

However you look at it, privacy is not as valued as it once was and technologies such as spy bots are capitalizing on such trends. The question is, does the novelty outweigh its potential ethical dilemmas?

She is particularly drawn to parametric and digital design, cultural context, and emerging voices in architecture. When I’m not analyzing the latest architectural trends, you’ll probably find me searching for hidden gems in cityscapes or appreciating the beauty of well-crafted spaces. After all, great design—like great connections—can be found in the most unexpected places. Speaking of connections, because architecture isn’t the only thing that brings people together.
