Foster + Partners Unveils Design for Greece’s Tallest and First Green Skyscraper

The award-winning Foster + Partners unveils plans for ‘Marina Tower’ to take place on the site of Athens’ former international airport and is planned to be the first green skyscraper in Greece and the tallest building at a height of 200 meters above sea level.

Planned to be the focal point of the Agios Kosmas Marina development on the previously mentioned site, Foster + Partners’ Marina Tower will almost double the height of the country’s current highest skyscraper, Athens Tower 1, which is designed by Ioannis Vikelas at a height of 103 meters.

Marina Tower will house 200 apartments spread across 45 floors; all dual-aspect to provide uninterrupted views of Athen’s coastline and its abundant daylight and ventilation.

Designed to be in harmony with “the special character of the Mediterranean landscape”, the skyscraper’s form is slim and incorporates features from its surroundings–it is covered with greenery and has recurring water features. Dividing the skyscraper into two towers and connecting them through the swimming pools platforms that happen alternately across the 45 floors makes Marina Tower visually light.

According to Foster + Partners, it has been designed as “one of the greenest high-rise buildings in the world and is a model of sustainable design”.

The renowned studio assured it will incorporate “best environmental practices and cutting-edge international safety protocols” to bring the skyscraper at its best, moreover, environmentally friendly materials will be used to construct the tower.

Marina Tower is part of Lamda Development’s 300-hectare Ellinikon development. The urban plan of Ellinikon aims to transform the site of Athen’s former international airport to comprise a series of neighborhoods, a large coastal park, and five other skyscrapers.

“Ellinikon masterplan gives new direction to urban development in Athens, bringing together new ways of living, working and playing, centered on a metropolitan park – a generous amenity for local communities and the city of Athens,” said Foster + Partners senior partner Antoinette Nassopoulos-Erickson.

“Our proposals for Marina Residential Tower build on these sustainable principles to generate a new paradigm for high-rise living and a green beacon in the landscape.”

Foster + Partners is an international architecture practice based in the UK and founded by the renowned architect Norman Foster in London in 1967. Marina Tower is expected to be finished by 2026. The studio designed several successful skyscrapers, including Russia Tower and The Bow. Moreover, Foster + Partners recently renovated a historic LA tower to house an Apple Store.
