Clever just doesn’t quite do it. At first glance, these images are portrayals of traditional Chinese landscapes. But look closer and with a slightly more critical eye, and you will see the real ‘scape as a trashscape.
The Chinese artist Yao Lu photographs net-covered heaps of garbage, reworking the shots on the computer to emulate picturesque landscapes, shrouded in mist. The works give a strong message about the state of not only China’s industrial development but the whole world’s and its impact on landscapes around the globe.
