Construction on SHoP Architects’ 9 DeKalb Avenue is continuing to approach its status as the tallest building in Brooklyn’s skyline and New York’s first supertall structure that is not in Manhattan.
Since our last update on 9 DeKalb Avenue back in July, the tower was at 721 feet tall and is now near the 984 feet threshold that will make it within the range of supertall structures by definition. Designed by New York-based SHoP Architects and developed by American real-estate development group, the planned to reach 1,066 feet project will house 450 rental apartments and 150 condominiums. The tower is expected to be complete by 2022.

Located adjacent to the Brooklyn Dime Savings Bank, 9 DeKalb Avenue respects the architectural features of the context–this appears in the tower’s facade that comprises bronze, steel, and stone as its main elements, and the vertical features mirroring the Bank’s columns.
Regarding progress, installation of the dark floor-to-ceiling glass and stainless steel and the aluminum facade is finished for more than half of the floors. At this pace, 9 DeKalb Avenue is expected to top out before the end of the year.
Moreover, the floor plates of the structure are getting smaller as the tower goes higher reaching the setbacks that have to do with the last set of tall mechanical floors and the crown. These sets of floors are necessarily found multiple times across the tower, you can see them by observing blank concrete walls lining the perimeter.

At its base, the 73-story tower incorporates the historic landmark, Brooklyn Dime Savings Bank. It was built in 1906 by architects Mowbray and Uffinger, and is now being restored and transformed into a shopping mall center. The bank might also operate as an entrance to the under-construction 9 DeKalb Avenue, as it plays a prominent urban role circulating pedestrians between Flatbush Avenue and Fulton Street; two of Brooklyn’s significant roadways.

9 DeKalb Avenue is not SHoP Architects and JDS Development Group’s only collaboration; another supertall skyscraper of their work is currently under construction in New York. Designed to be “the world’s skinniest skyscraper”, 111 West 75th Street topped at 1,412 feet with a height-to-width ratio of 24:1. The structure is expected to complete this year.
