The Lindemann Performing Arts Center at Brown University
Brown University is set to unveil its new Lindemann Performing Arts Center, designed by REX and Joshua Ramus. The building, covering 101,000 square feet, is designed to facilitate collaboration and offer versatile spaces for both performance and instruction on campus. It forms a cohesive arts district with the Perry and Marty Granoff Center for the Creative Arts, enhancing Providence’s cultural offerings. This district, named the Ronald O. Perelman Arts District, is accessible from Brown’s main pedestrian corridor, The Walk, further expanding the university’s presence within the city. Brown University has shared photos in anticipation of the center’s inauguration.

The shoe box-shaped building is adorned with a striking fluted aluminum rain screen facade, adding intricate detail to its overall appearance. Internally, the design is both versatile and multifaceted. It encompasses a main hall that offers five distinct configurations, accommodating audiences ranging from 70 to 530 individuals based on specific requirements, making it suitable for various events and gatherings.
Additionally, the facility features the multipurpose William Riley Hall, serving as both a rehearsal space and a secondary performance venue with a seating capacity of 135. There is also a black-box theater known as The Performance Lab, designed for intimate performances and equipped with 50 seats. Furthermore, the structure houses The Movement Lab, a 98-seat studio tailored to dance and movement-based practices.

Complementing these performance and practice areas are four dedicated rehearsal rooms, ensuring that artists and performers have the necessary spaces to refine their skills. Lastly, the building includes storage facilities and an extending lobby, providing a welcoming and aesthetically engaging element to the overall architectural composition.

The project was begun in 2017 after the university launched its Brown Arts Initiative (later renamed the Brown Arts Institute or BAI), a comprehensive plan to further cultivate a transdisciplinary exchange between faculty and students in an elevation of the role of the arts as the traditional center of Brown’s educational experience.
This addition serves as a complement to the highly praised Perelman Performing Arts Center, which made its debut in Manhattan this September. Moreover, Brown University has unveiled plans for a new Life Sciences Building within the Jewelry District, a project thoughtfully designed by Ballinger and TenBerke. Notably, the all-electric Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) Brook Street Residence Halls project was successfully completed and opened earlier this semester.
