How Did Mithun’s Methodology Lead to Architecture Firm Award?

The Seattle-based firm, which includes offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles, with a workforce of 180 people, was founded in 1949 by the renowned architect and instructor Omer Mithun, a Norwegian immigrant to the United States.

Mithun’s firm incorporated Omer Mithun’s vision for sustainable discipline and enduring social impact that masterfully embraces emerging technologies and creates a solid mentorship culture. For doing so, Mithun thoughtfully coordinates three essential objectives of a successful modern architecture practice: aesthetic design, a passionate embrace of creating a sustainable future, and commitment to society.

About Mithun’s contributions to the industry, an AIA press release stated:

“With projects like 2060 Folsom, a San Francisco affordable housing complex that is net-zero carbon certified, and Chatham University’s net-positive 30-acre campus extension, Mithun has positioned itself as a leader in the industry. At the Louisiana Children’s Museum in New Orleans, a revolutionary design integrates indoor and outdoor educational opportunities that adopt literacy, early childhood research, and environmental education. This commitment to advancing research is one of the firm’s most valuable contributions”.

Edward Mazria, the 2021 AIA Gold Medal winner, wrote in support of the firm’s nomination for the Architecture Firm Award, “Mithun is not pretentious. They’ve built a firm and nurtured a group of defined, highly competent, and developing specialists. These experts are just effectively doing the work so that they can share their dreams and ambitions and, more importantly, their outcomes.” These qualifications make them a perfect example of outstanding leaders in our field and the larger sustainable construction community.

This year’s announcement follows Carol Ross Barney of Chicago’s Ross Barney Architects receiving the 2023 AIA Gold Award, the highest AIA recognition for an individual architect.
