Switzerland has witnessed the opening of the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge, connecting the two mountain towns of Grächen and Zermatt. Located just a few miles away from the Italian borders, the new “Charles Kuonen Bridge” offers exceptional views of the Swiss Alps and the iconic Matterhorn Mountain. It extends for 494 meters (1620 feet), 342 feet longer than the world’s former longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Japan Kokonoe Yume.

The distance can be covered by hikers in 10 minutes, but they will have to go one after the other for the bridge is only 65 centimeters wide (2 feet). The horizontal views are not all there is to the new bridge which happens to have a see-through deck, so thrill seekers can enjoy the view way down Switzerland’s’ “deepest cut valley.”

The Longest Bridge in the World is named after its biggest sponsor, and it was built by swissrope / Lauber Seilbahnen AG in a duration of 10 weeks. It is a 2 to 2.5-hour walk from the municipality of Randa, and 6 to 7-hour from both Grächen and Zermatt.
