A thick plume of black smoke rose from the waterfront Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Centre, television footage showed. Firefighters on a crane sprayed water on the building, a structure covered with geometric Islamic patterns, before Kuwaiti authorities confirmed that the blaze had been extinguished.
The official Kuwait News Agency said no one was hurt. It said five fire departments helped to battle the fire, which sent thick smoke pouring from the waterfront complex.
