Elon Musk’s Boring Company Plans 6-Mile Tesla Tunnels in Miami

The Boring Company, led by the entrepreneur and multi-billionaire Elon Musk, has submitted a proposal for a new 6-mile-long Loop tunnel near Miami. It would be the second full-scale commercial deployment of a transportation system if allowed.

A Boring Company Loop system is a network of tunnels through where Tesla electric vehicles drive at high speeds between stations to transport people around a metropolis. Elon Musk’s The Boring Company started back in 2016, then it completed a test tunnel at the SpaceX HQ in California and The Las Vegas Convention Center Loop; a 1.5-mile tunnel with three stops at the city’s huge convention center, which was the first to be implemented.

Recently, Las Vegas just approved a 29-mile long Loop expansion that will connect the entire strip to the airport with 51 stations. The first phase of the enlargement of the first casino has already been finished by the Boring Company. Meanwhile, the company is looking forward to solving the traffic crisis in Miami through its 6.2 miles long Loop tunnel. The project was first hinted at by Elon Musk at the beginning of 2021, this was followed by meetings with the Mayor of Miami Francis Suarez.

“Modern problems require modern solutions and the city of Miami will explore every possible avenue for improving the quality of life of our citizens,”
—Said Francis Suarez

The project is expected to cost between $185 million and $220 million, which is a fraction of the cost of a subway or other similar mode of transit.

The Boring Company claims that the project may be completed in three years, but only if the regulatory and permission processes are accelerated. The city appears to want to move forward, but it needs funds from the regional, state, and federal governments.

“We have a lot of traffic congestion and this would be a way of alleviating a great deal of that traffic.”
—Said North Miami Beach commissioner Michael Joseph

Why Did Elon Musk Choose Tunnels?

Elon Musk’s Boring Company’s objective is to eliminate “soul-destroying traffic” by enabling low-cost public transit that transports passengers directly to their final destination with no stops in between. The tunnels reduce the surface effect and the use of valuable surface land by descending underground. They also don’t interfere with existing transit infrastructure, according to the business, and will make future development easier.

“Cars & trucks stuck in traffic generate megatons of toxic gases & particulate, but @boringcompany road tunnels under Miami would solve traffic & be an example to the world.”
—Said Elon Musk in a tweet

The loop transit system will be all-electric, zero-emissions, and self-driving, thanks to Tesla automobiles. The 4.9-mile ride from the international airport to the Las Vegas Convention Center will take just 5 minutes and cost $10, according to sample route times from the Las Vegas Loop, which is presently under construction. The LVCC loop, located in the Las Vegas Convention Center, was the company’s first commercially operating loop system. It cost $47 million to build and consists of three stops and 1.7 miles of tunnel.
