Ellipse Greenhouse, SAW.Earth has directed a student workshop to create an ellipsoidal greenhouse, optimizing solar exposure for the Scholes Street Community Garden in Brooklyn, NY.
Over 4 weeks, with students from the New York Institute of Technology Graduate School of Architecture and Design, the team constructed an ellipse-shaped greenhouse with tiered shelving to maximize area along the sun path of the garden.
Students used cedar wood and copper flashing to allow for subtle aging over time.
This marks the sixth completed permanent structure SAW.Earth’s program at NYIT SoAD has built, creating structures for community gardens throughout NYC.
