The QS subject rankings, the best-known global list for architecture, combine surveys of academic and employer reputation with measures of research citations. That favours large research universities such as Cambridge and MIT, and it means that small, independent design schools, which publish less research, often do not appear at all.

1. Southern California Institute of Architecture, SCI-Arc (Los Angeles, California, USA)

Founded in 1972 and housed in a long former freight depot in the Arts District of Los Angeles, SCI-Arc is an independent school known for experimental design and computational and digital work. Its Bachelor and Master of Architecture are accredited by the NAAB, the body whose accreditation is the usual route to licensure in the USA.

2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT (Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA)

MIT, second in the QS 2026 subject ranking, founded the first architecture department in the United States in 1865. It is known for research that links architecture with technology, computation, building science and urbanism, and its programmes run from undergraduate studies to doctorates. 15. The Glasgow School of Art (Glasgow, Scotland)

The Glasgow School of Art, one of the few remaining independent art schools in the UK, teaches architecture in its Mackintosh School of Architecture. Its famous Mackintosh Building was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a former student, but was badly damaged by fires in 2014 and 2018; in July 2026 the school said it could not take forward the estimated £265 million restoration on its own and would seek outside support. Common mistakes when choosing an architecture school, and how to avoid them

• Choosing by ranking alone. Even for the top architecture schools in the world, rankings measure research and reputation, not the studio teaching you will receive. Look at student work, staff and studio culture.
• Ignoring professional recognition. A degree that is accredited in one country may not lead to registration in another. Check with the regulator where you plan to work, such as NAAB and NCARB in the US or ARB in the UK.
• Underestimating cost and length. Professional qualification usually takes five years or more of study plus practical experience, and fees and living costs vary enormously between cities.
