LAVA Architects designed this railway station in Astana, Kazakhstan with ideas of utilizing the critical junction and waypoint as a special place for meeting and greeting. Often when we travel and arrive at such stations with only thoughts of leaving and getting to our actual destination as soon as possible. The Astana Railway Station that LAVA proposed seeks to become what they defined as ‘A Green Cathedral of the Future’ and represents a place of welcome, greeting and the celebration of society.

The sleek undulating form thrives on movement, light and space. The mass effortlessly rises and flows to create a 310,000 square meter railway station to be recognized as one of three critical central places within Astana. Within the structure the terminals are open and well lit thanks to the gridded canopy covering the site. Besides being used as a means of transport, both internationally and locally, the station will also host several activities including social, commerce, trade, work, and play, making it not just a location in which people come and go, but rather visit and enjoy themselves.
