Architectonic Landscape of the Beethoven Concert Hall
Merging landscape and architecture, the Oslo and New York based Snøhetta architectural firm has proposed a design for Beethoven Concert hall competition. To be located in Bonn, Germany, the design fuses the building with the surrounding landscape through a long outdoor ramp leading to the open rooftop. The main volume of the building, structured from large glass facades and marble-aggregate concrete, is rotated at 45 degrees. This rotation is with respect to the Rhine River and the nearby Beethovenhalle and it allows for an open plaza space to be created between the foyer and the surrounding environment.

The “structure and surroundings flow into one another, creating a landscape that invites play and intimates a diverse range of uses” describes the design team. Snøhetta creation flows from the surrounding landscape to the building creating an open cultural institution. It incorporates multi public spaces, each with a unique function serving the concert hall, and offering the building a multi-use characteristic. Approaching the concert hall, which is partly floating above the foyer, the visitor engages in a very captivating experience. The dialogue created between the design and the surrounding context engages the visitors to explore, enjoy, socialize, and discover new dimensions of the design and the music it celebrates.
