A new museum for Pompeii | Edoardo Fumia

“POMPEII SAVE THE HISTORY” COMPETITION:

Pompeii was buried by a pyroclastic rain (of stones and lapilli) in 79 AD, the idea of the museum (MUPP) uses this tragic event to give new life to the city.

The shape of the building refers to one of the stones thrown from Vesuvius, which landed on the lot and has cooled rapidly, suffered the effect of magma blistering (the formation of cavities on the inside). From these subtractions is added the desire to make the whole project feasible (step), a reminder of the the cavea of the amphitheater, adjacent to it. The building looks like a monolith on four levels (one underground and three surface) of functional spaces (deposits, auditorium audio / video, bookshop, temporary exhibition areas, permanent exhibition areas, roof terrace, toilets, reception, relaxation areas) .
Coating the outside and inside is in stone, with travertine slabs of the Campania region.
