A 3D Printed Room Michael Hansmeyer and Benjamin Dillenburger

‘Digital Grotesque’ is a series of 3D printed complex architectural objects by Michael Hansmeyer and Benjamin Dillenburger. The drawing, generation and fabrication process is highlighted for the 1:3 prototype of the 3D printed room, which premiered in the Swiss Art Awards in Basel, Switzerland.

The project works with the fundamental architectural idea of a room while pushing the limits of technologically manipulated form. 80 million surfaces are generated using 3D modeling software and mesh-based digital language.

Furthermore, millions of grains of sand are bound together to form a new typology of sandstone that is ultimately treated to be glazed and gilded.
