Mecanoo’s Lawson Centre for Sustainability Opens at Trinity College Toronto

The Lawson Centre for Sustainability at Trinity College Toronto is the first new building the College has added since 1979. Mecanoo designed it with the Toronto firm RDHA as a sustainability-driven academic and residential building, one of the most anticipated projects of 2026. The two firms set out to build a community and a “living lab,” drawing on the College’s long habits of shared meals and communal gatherings.

The College first imagined a fourteen-story high-rise tower, but the design team rejected that scheme for a walkable building instead. This lower volume frames the existing campus and opens new ground for food production and social encounters. The broader vision brought together food, nature, work with local materials, and hands-on learning about sustainable living.

Trinity is federated with the University of Toronto, and its campus follows a traditional Oxbridge typology of Neo-Gothic and modernist buildings around courtyard and forecourt lawns. The original plan for the 6 Hoskin quad called for a second courtyard that was never completed. Instead a parking lot and a padlocked soccer pitch framed the north edge, while the main campus axis served as the College’s loading dock.

The renovated composition shapes new courtyards around the existing buildings, which creates an enclave under a maple tree that once faced the former parking lot. The new architectural language complements the surrounding Gothic and modernist styles, because windows shift in size and position across the residence floors. Champagne-colored aluminum accents wrap the windows, entrances, and the fourth-floor event pavilion.

The building carries the College’s values of collegial sustainable living through a holistic approach paired with expanded educational programming. The architects describe it as a “living lab” where students become both participants and beneficiaries of a Centre focused on healthy, experiential learning and living. That idea shapes the interiors, where views of nature, ample daylight, and exposed timber work together to improve wellbeing and reduce stress.

The structure is a hybrid mass-timber system sourced from Ontario, which combines engineered wood with other materials to span efficiently. Sustainability measures include a high-performing envelope, a geothermal heat pump that draws heat from the ground, rainwater collection, and a future-phase photovoltaic array of solar panels. The repeating floor layouts make the hybrid timber construction efficient to build.

The low-rise, walkable T-volume shapes roofscapes that hold photovoltaic panels and space for urban farming. Courtyards are planted with local pollinator species to form new informal gardens, while drought-tolerant indigenous species wrap the building. These plantings tie the landscape directly to the Centre’s teaching about food and ecology.

Food awareness sits at the core of the College’s sustainability vision, and the Lawson Centre’s farm-to-table concept makes it a central theme. The rooftop urban farm and a community kitchen give students hands-on education in growing and cooking. On the ground floor, the south-facing café is flanked by seating and lounges for communal dining.

On the second floor, the community kitchen hosts university and community programs in food education, including cooking and nutrition classes that use seasonal produce from the rooftop farm. Every residence floor adds communal lounges with kitchens where resident students can share meals together. This chain of kitchens runs the farm-to-table idea through the whole building.

On the fourth floor, the multipurpose event pavilion holds up to 200 people and looks out over the courtyard gardens, the downtown skyline, and the CN Tower. Other academic amenities include meeting and teaching spaces, offices, and a lecture hall. Open work and study spaces thread through the building between these programs.

The residence houses 262 units with 357 beds across the east and west volumes. The mix runs from studio units to single and double dorm rooms, and 15% of these are barrier-free for accessibility. Together the numbers show how the Centre balances residential density against the walkable, low-rise form.

The project arrives amid other recent news from Canada. Vancouver was named the world’s 9th most livable city in The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Index, a ranking that evaluates 173 cities across stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. The index tracks both long-term patterns and year-over-year changes.

Toronto-based startup Civic Grid designed a prototype architectural battery and installed it in a public square in Ontario, with the aim of changing how communities relate to the electrical power behind everyday life. In May, Parks Canada announced Kengo Kuma & Associates and Paul Raff Studio’s winning design for a reimagined visitor centre and community space in Banff National Park.

Also in May, the landscape and urban design studio SLA unveiled the design for the public realm and streetscapes of Toronto’s new 39.8-hectare waterfront community, “Ookwemin Minising,” in the Port Lands. These projects share the Lawson Centre’s interest in food, energy, and public space across Canadian cities.

The Lawson Centre for Sustainability closes a long gap in building at Trinity College Toronto, because it is the campus’s first new structure since 1979. It replaces a parking lot and a padlocked soccer pitch with courtyards, gardens, and a rooftop farm that feeds the kitchens below. The future-phase photovoltaic array remains the next step in the building’s sustainability program.
