Disheveled Geometry

Yale School of Architecture organized the third edition of Mark Gage’s Disheveled Geometry Seminar. Its aim was to research and explore the possibilities of using traditional and historic materials in present architecture.

Mary Burr and Katie Stranix, two of the students picked marble as their material and set out to design an architectural panel. Inspired by the works of sculptor Elizabeth Tunk, they decided to provide smooth curvature to the panel thus transforming it into a 3-dimensional panel.

After experimenting on various softwares and trying multiple techniques, the duo decided to use a KUKA robot CNC router to apply texture to the material.

A 20-inch-by-40-inch panel of Obomodulan, a high density foam was used for final model. The router was able to execute undercuts and apply texture but a few places which could not be reached were later hand-drilled by the duo. Final finishing took close to 14 hours of hand sanding while automative primer was used to seal the panel.
