FUNDAMENTALS : Form/ContraForm is an installation by Bekkering Adams at Palazzo Mora, Venice. The installation is a part of Architecture Biennale of Venice and is curated by Rem Koolhaas. The exhibition puts the definition and perception of space and infinity as its center theme.

The architects creates a homogeneous volume of 2.4 x 2.4 m using spherical objects hanging from wires that do not fill the whole space between floor and ceiling, leading to a floating form effect. The hanging elements define this mass with a subtracted cavity, which forms a passage for the visitors. The cavity wrapped in a cloud of small hanging objects allows the user to experience the boundary as well as the perception of infinity. From outside the cavity can be seen as a changing illuminated shape between the light, where reflections of the cube with light projections highlight unexpected new vistas. The light projections change the cavity’s color, shape and size, thus offering a different appearance each time. The architects also create a tactile expression of material and detail- relating to the idea of Form/ContraForm.

The essence of FUNDAMENTALS is a space where the disappearance of ‘infinity’ is illustrated by projections relating to the blurring boundaries of endlessness. The architect explains that our space is no longer infinite, our resources are no longer limitless, and our earth is no longer endless. The exhibit also tries to express how current technology and globalization have abolished the perception of ‘infinity’.
The installation provides an experience that is not only shaped by the physical boundaries of space, but is extended beyond the tangible, and has been made possible through the support of the Grant Programme Internationalization of the Stimulerings Fonds Creatieve Industrie.
