3D maps bring cities history back to life | Matthew Picton

3D maps bring cities history back to life, the British-born artist Matthew Picton created extremely detailed paper sculptures of different cities to bring their history back to life. He mixed art, text or even special paper to recall a memory, historical event, a period of time or something specific about the city.

His sculptures are considered layers of history illustrating a systematic pattern of human civilization. His concept is adding more depth to the maps.  “I started to want to introduce more elements of actual text and history,” he says, adding that he “started trying to imagine as to how to sculpt the spaces in between the streets.”
