Mixed-Use, Cultural Complex in Munich, winners of Munich’s new social development are Delugan Meissi Associate Architects or DMAA from Vienna. Their concept is developed in collaboration with the architecture firm Wimmer und Partner and the proposal is expected for completion in 2019. The competition was issued for the design of a mixed-use cultural complex in Munich at Hanns Seidel Platz. It has an estimated 40,500-square-meter scheme that will provide office spaces, a civic centre with a large public plaza, a concert hall and a 160-unit “living tower in the Neuperlach district.

DMAA Architects believe that standing out from the usual narratives would make their designs pertain a personal message in the long run. ‘Modern versus fashionable’ is the team’s modus operandi as they pursue not what is the current trend, but what can be a stable response to on-going and changing ways of life. In the interview Christopher Schweiger argues that in terms of the architectural aesthetics, their projects aim to stand out with functionality in the first place as their ethos is about future/forward/dynamic thinking.

This statement is confirmed by the winning competition entry for Munich: the building and its landscape architecture represent a strong and timeless piece, which would stand the test of time’s perception. It has the ambition to fit for use in the future and offer atmospheres of comfort, ease and friendliness, which atmospheres should be fitted in rooms specifically designed for such positive experiences. The design, according to the architects’ modus operandi, is based primarily on the idea of free experimentation, which results in one final outcome: the shape of the building.

Dynamism is expressed via the existence of large open spaces, different levels, the slender curve of the main glazed building and the addition of a rooftop glass passage and a living tower incorporates the team’s main research question: ‘Where is society going?’ The design evokes of DMAA’s approach of ‘sequences and snapshots’, of mixing different contexts and relying on the human factor and emotions as important too.
