As Autumn Leaves | Students of Laboratory of Computational Design

As Autumn Leaves, as apart of the Beijing Design week 2013, students of the Laboratory of Computational Design (LCD), designed the installation “As Autumn Leaves”. It’s based around the transitional conditions that surround the change in season, this being the weather conditions and the physical appearance of the landscape. AAL uses this change to influence the thinking of those moving throughout the installation, by stimulating their memory and emotions.

As the overall design was fabricated using parametric designing tools, the students studied geometric growth to further understand how patterns grow using the logic of nature. Applying it to their work aided them in creating a structure both visually pleasing and structurally sound.

Starting the construction process, each component where digitally fabricated and cut using a laser cutter. Various sections where pre-assembled, for an easy assembly on site .

The location in which the installation sits is the historic Hutong district of Beijing at the entrance of the Dashilar factory. As this is where aspiring artist present their designs, having the AAL within that space, can work their advantage.

Anastasia Andreieva is an accomplished Architectural Projects Editor at Arch2O, bringing a unique blend of linguistic expertise and design enthusiasm to the team. Born and raised in Ukraine, she holds a Master’s degree in Languages from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Her deep passion for architecture and visual storytelling led her to transition from translation and editorial roles into the world of design media. With a keen eye for conceptual clarity and narrative structure, Anastasia curates and presents global architectural projects with precision and flair. She is particularly drawn to parametric and digital design, cultural context, and emerging voices in architecture. When I’m not analyzing the latest architectural trends, you’ll probably find me searching for hidden gems in cityscapes or appreciating the beauty of well-crafted spaces. After all, great design—like great connections—can be found in the most unexpected places. Speaking of connections, because architecture isn’t the only thing that brings people together.
