Installation of 886 Antique Stools Ai Weiwei
Artist Ai Weiwei has most recently created Bang, an installation incorporating 886 antique wooden stools for the 2013 Venice Art Biennale.
In Chinese culture, families typically had at least one of these handcrafted 3-legged stools for use in the home. Many of these venerable stools have since been replaced by plastic and metal alternatives.
Weiwei was able to salvage hundreds of these stools for use in his staggering installation set in the German Pavilion.
