CJ Corporation, CJ Blossom Park

A new world-class research and development headquarters for CJ Corporation repositions the company’s operations into a new interdisciplinary format that will increase efficiency, enhance innovation, and accelerate speed to market. Conceived as “The Only One,” this unique 1.2 million sf building consolidates CJ Corporation’s previously disparate pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and food products businesses into a single location, enabling it to create industry-defining product strategies and increase its global competitiveness.

The design is founded on the “new scientific workplace” concept – a radical design approach pioneered by Cannon Design that replaces old-fashioned laboratory planning ideas with integrated innovation strategies to create dynamic, boundaryless environments that increase productivity, efficiency, and creativity.
“The Only One” co-locates the full spectrum of research and development facilities in three high-rise towers arranged around a dynamic central atrium, with a café bar, meeting rooms, and laboratory spaces at each level. Placing all aspects of CJ Corporation’s science on display was central to the radical scientific innovation concept. On each floor, unbridled collaboration is further accomplished through the seamless integration of offices, labs, and amenity space, and a series of themed double-height interaction spaces linking each tower. Designed for optimum flexibility and adaptability, the three towers can accommodate a wide range of complex scientific facilities, including basic science labs, specialist product development labs, data centers, a multianimal vivarium, scale-up facilities, and a number of pilot plant installations.

The building extends CJ Corporation’s “Healthy, Joyful, and Convenient” lifestyle vision with a wealth of employee amenities on the first and second floors, including gymnasium, café, restaurant, childcare, retail, and educational facilities and a variety of themed social, professional, and digital collaboration spaces of various scales and sizes.Traversing the exterior is a series of dynamic perforated shading ribbons that automatically respond to shifts in solar exposure and changes in internal heat production throughout the year.

This radical double-layered façade provides significant energy savings and contributes to an interior environment optimized for scientific functionality and occupant comfort. This feature further illustrates CJ Corporation’s commitment to staff welfare and environmental responsibility through its high-quality internal and external brand experience.
