Un[Expected] Mate[Reality] Workshop is a week-long intensive workshop which offers an opportunity to students, researchers and young designers to explore methods and tools related to innovative topics of the architectural discipline. The Workshop is the first of a series of initiatives based in the School of Architecture and Society of Politecnico di Milano and focusing on Computational Design and Emerging Technologies. The aim is to introduce students to contemporary design strategies centered on the application of advanced software determining an augmented ability to conceptualize, develop and build innovative architecture.
The workshop is intended in a holistic learn-by-design approach where advanced design methodologies and techniques are introduced directly with fabrication and construction of a 1:1 installation. Students and instructors will experience collaboratively a challenging design experience ranging from Form-Finding theory to real construction of a temporary pavilion based on a parametric strategies. The workshop is conceived on three integrated modules:
+ Parametric Design Introduction // It will be introduced the fundamentals of parametric design with exercises on digital form-finding, funicular structures, associative design logic, development of parametric components.
+ Design development of an Installation // The students organized by groups and with the help of trained instructors will develop a design scheme for a temporary pavilion with digital tools and production of test-models. The final design version will be then geometrically optimized for production.
+ Digital Fabrication and Construction // Parametric design information will be transferred to construction nested drawings ready for digital fabrication. Students will experience CNC-based fabrication of pleated components and will collaborate to the construction of the final pavilion.
The participation is open to max 25 students of the Faculty of Architecture and Society of Politecnico di Milano as well as International Students in architecture and interior design. The workshop students will receive an official Certificate of Attendance equivalent to 4 cfu (official academic credits) for the Bachelor and Master Programs at the Faculty of Architecture of Politecnico di Milano.Read more
