Milan-based Studio of Architecture Stefano Boeri Architetti designs Asia’s first vertical forest in the Nanjing Pukou District near the Yangtze River in China. Nanjing Green Towers will be entirely covered in greenery, following the Italian Studio’s first model of a vertical forest which was inaugurated in Milan in 2014.
600 tall trees and 500 medium-sized trees from 23 local species, in addition to 2500 cascading plants and shrubs, carried on balconies will comprise the façades of the towers, covering a total area of 6,000sqm. According to Stefano Boeri Architects, the project “will help to regenerate local biodiversity.” It will absorb 25 tons of CO2 yearly while producing 60 kg of Oxygen daily.
The two towers of Nanjing will be used for separate functions, and they will be connected at the bottom by a podium. The 200-meter-high tower, which will be characterized by its heavy green crown on top, in addition to its height, will be hosting a museum, a green architecture school, offices from the 8th to 35th floor, and a private club on the rooftop. The other tower which will be 108-meter-high will host the 247 different sized rooms of a new Hyatt Hotel as well as a swimming pool on its rooftop. The 20-meter-high podium will host commercial, recreational and educative functions, including multi-brands shops, a food market, restaurants, a conference hall, and exhibition spaces. The Nanjing towers are planned to be finished in 2018, and they will be the first of many “Vertical Forests” to be built in China and other cities worldwide.
Nanjiing Vertical Forest project, which is scheduled to be finished in 2018, is the third prototype, after Milan and Lausanne, of a project about urban forestation and demineralisation that Stefano Boeri Architects will develop all over the world and in particular in other Chinese cities such as Shijiazhuang, Liuzhou, Guizhou, Shanghai and Chongqing.
