Zephyr | Zaha Hadid Architects

The sofa is, as a piece of furniture, something that’s a little bit like the cockroach. Not a flattering statement for sofas everywhere, but true in a certain sense. The ideal form was found centuries ago and little has changed since.

Zaha Hadid Architects have chosen to challenge this convention, seeking a form both interesting and innovative. The sofa, as proven by the Zephyr sofa, can be made new- needn’t be sat in only one way- is capable of surprise. The sinuous and unpredictable form of the Zephyr was inspired by natural rock formations which grow or rather are uncovered, by millions of years of aquatic erosion. The shape gives possibilities for multiple ways of sitting; with its deep seat, sitting cross-legged is just as viable as lounging back agains the generous backrests.

The structural materials used are lacquered to draw out every detail and give the form an added level of sleekness; the upholstery is bespoke and offers an interesting counterpoint to the tactile and materialistic qualities of the structure. The piece as a whole is one that could just as easily find a home against brick walls as it could ultra-modern settings.
