This theatre is situated in Cluj-Napoca, Romania on a site with a lot of problems created by the high slope (~12 meters from one side to another of the site) and the presence on the boundaries of the site of a gas station and a supermarket with a suburban look. So actually we had to design a theatre that could “rise” over the gas station that is on the bottom of the site and at the same time cover the suburban looking supermarket. We’ve done this by raising the Eastern part of the theatre over the gas station. In this way, we got a monumental entrance area that a theatre deserves and also enough space under the building to place underground parking without rising the building costs. The building has two major functions: the theatre hosted in the horizontally developed building and the creation center that is developed in the tower, over the theatre. We designed the creation center in a tower because we tried to speculate the height of the theatre tower scene and incorporate the creation center in his height. The creation center access is on the roof of the theatre because we wanted to design the roof as an exterior extension of the creation center and we wanted this roof to become a playground for the kids from the neighborhood. In the interior design of the theatre, we tried to borrow something from the classic theatre atmosphere using warm materials like red carpet, wood, light effects in a contemporary manner.
