The Broad Museum|Diller Scofidio + Renfro

Diller Scofidio + Renfro’s new contemporary art museum is currently on its way to realization and is set to be opened in 2014. The new project is set to rejuvenate an area in Los Angeles, California that has been growing less popular; located adjacent to the structure is the Walt Disney Concert Hall and Museum of Contemporary Art. “The Broad” (also dubbed “the veil and the vault”) consists of two rectilinear forms: one housing the main functions and the other serving as the exterior performative skin. It not only functions as a museum, but also as multimedia space and archive storage and is set to house almost 2,000 works of art.

Upon initial observation, one can see the union between the rectangular perforated façade and the almost soft interior characterized by the jelly-like tears from the structure onto the ground. The cellular exoskeleton structure, coined “the veil”, serves as a skylight monitor for the gallery space. The side-walls are casted in concrete while 7-foot-deep steel girders support the roof. Thick girders enable the gallery to have a columnless art space that is easily adaptable to other functions.

Diller Scofidio + Renfro offers a live construction cam to track the progress of The Broad; as of current, they are working on installing the skylight monitors after finishing the steel armature in the lobby and main entrance areas.
