Recycle V. Upcycle? Need there be a distinction? Recycling is necessary, there is no doubt about that. With landfills filled and great trash vortices in our oceans, throwing things out is patently wrong for more and more things as our technology and creativity progresses.

To upcycle could be described as not only breaking a material down for reuse, but the actual act of reusing it for something greater or as great but different. These rough, organic and uneven luminaries, called Pulp Pendant Lamps, created by Folklore design studio, are a prime example of just that. Composed of recycled, pulped newspaper paste, the material appears to have been plastered over a balloon of unknown contents (maybe water, or a set concrete for replicability- these are only guesses). The end result is a raw-feeling design that could find a home in almost any and every setting.

Miss Maple Pendant Lamp | Elisa Strozyk

One way of looking at wood is as a smooth straight plank of wood, but some can look at wood and see far more potential. German designer Elisa Strozyk saw potential in breaking wood into triangles creating the intricate and visual Miss Maple Pendant Lamp.

Day or night, this pendant is visually pleasing especially when lit as the intersections between the triangles exude light due to their translucent nature.

LikeArchitects has made this superb facility in the “Centro Cultural de Belém” in Lisbon for the Ikea brand, ‘LEDscape’ the name of the installation, deals with light as a constructive element of space and landscape.

‘LEDscape’ challenges the passerby to an interactive experience – A pathway gradually lit with 1200 light spots, invites introspection and individual appropriation of the installation.

Pouring Lamp | Yeong Woo Kim

Funny Night Light “Martyr Monkey”

This comic light is quite refreshing, it combines wit with energy conservation as it automatically lights up when there isn’t enough light, and switches off when there is natural light available.

It lacks no humor as it does this.
