Daybed FAZ is part of the Faz outdoor furniture collection, manufactured by Vondom. The collection, designed by Ramón Esteve, is inspired by the mineral shapes we find in nature and each piece of the collection has a sculptural character.

Daybed Faz has a sound system with built-in speakers we can connect by Bluetooth to our mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones, surrounding ourselves by sound while enjoying the sun or shade. Playing your favorite music or watching a movie with high sound quality due to its Dual component, becomes a new experience that moves away from the concept of furniture. The advanced devices of our daily lives are incorporated to the daybed’s polygonal shapes.

Its light top of translucent fabric uses a hydraulic system to open or close. The built-in wheels allow easy displacement and a 360 ° rotation to change the orientation as needed. The piece itself offers the opportunity of creating unique spaces due to its possibility of adding Led lighting activated by remote control.

The design of the Serac Bench has evolved from the formal language of ice formations created within intersecting glacial crevasses.

Developed as an urban sculpture for seating and resting, the striated articulation of the Serac Bench emerges seamlessly from the landscape, each layer taking its own unique trajectory in reaction to latent forces that disperse – and ultimately coalesce – the many strata of the bench.

The Serac Bench showcases the fluid, continuous nature of Zaha Hadid’s work – exploring relationships between solid and void, object and ground, form and function; an evolutionary lineage evident throughout her repertoire. The bench has been developed in resin quartz, a tough and durable material that when shaped into dynamic curvilinear forms, transitions into a softer, fluid and tactile surface. The sparkling crystal balances a stunning light play with mesmerizing depth.

PRODUCTION :
CNC router, 9mm MDF. All components being identical, they can be economically laid out on a sheet of 8by4 MDF producing minimal waste. After being cut out each component is fed onto a metal pole that runs through the width of the chair, then splayed and fixed in place in order to achieve the desired aesthetic and comfort. Then the whole chair is primed and lacquered.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Marilyn was always in the back of my mind when designing this chair but my main aim was to produce a chair made from one component. I started with a fairly simple idea that I sketched and play around with it in my sketchbook until I was convinced that it’s is worth developing. I then took the basic drawn shape to the computer and started producing more refined shapes for the main component. Several models then followed perfecting the aesthetics and apparent comfort of the chair. It’s only once a full size prototype was made that I could fully understand the boundaries and balances between it’s style and comfort and therefore decide on final detailing.

CHALLENGE:
Trying to get the correct shape for the main component was a challenge. As the repeated component for this design performs many tasks; the front end of it being both the armrest and the front leg and the back end of it being the back rest and the back leg. This meant a balance between the functions of the component had to be found. Its shape had to be just right.

The cardboard material and the flat structure result in these products being lightweight. and allow the products to be easily flat-packed for transport. Some are electric products, designed to be energy efficient without using batteries.
Once the products have been mounted they look like 5 different endangered species of animals.

This is intended to raise the consumers’ awareness, making them remember that each product and how it’s produced, is in strait connection with the environment in which we all live.

Exhibition at MoMA

Plywood: Material, Process, Form, and installation in MoMA’s Philip Johnson Architecture and Design Galleries, features examples from MoMA’s collection of modern designs that take advantage of the formal and aesthetic possibilities offered by plywood, from around 1930 through the 1950s. Archival photographs illuminate the process of design and manufacture in plywood.

Iconic furniture by Alvar Aalto, Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, and Arne Jacobsen appear alongside organic platters by Tapio Wirkkala (1951), Sori Yanagi’s Butterfly Stool (1956), an architectural model for a prefabricated house by Marcel Breuer (1943), and experimental designs for plywood in the aeronautics industry. The installation is organized by Juliet Kinchin, Curator, and Aidan O’Connor, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Architecture and Design, The Museum of Modern Art.
