Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science

The partly open-air structure will be home to science galleries, a planetarium and a Living Core combining an aquarium and wildlife centre that contains a microcosm of South Florida’s animal, fish and plant species.

The Living Core will frame the starting point of each visit, providing an environmental context for studies of the social, technological, physical and natural world around us. The key design concept is ‘building as exhibit’ and Grimshaw’s living building will physically and visibly change in response to the environment, events and the mood of the city.

High-performance mechanical systems will be fine-tuned to provide superior comfort at low energy for the interior spaces. An accessible vegetated roof will be accompanied by a constructed wetland adjacent to the building to control of storm water run-off and enhance site biodiversity.

Grimshaw, working with local architects Rodriguez and Quiroga, anticipates the museum will be a hub for wonder and exploration in the heart of Miami’s Arts and Entertainment District.
