FFOC, Form Finding Olympic Village in Nefertari new city which is located in the north of Qattara Depression in Egypt, is a design proposal for a self-generated layout of sport venues, through many times of trials and experiments to get the optimum layout morphology. The proposal introduces an experiment in urban design field to have a generative node based layout morphology. The issue is how to abstract all the massive architectural forms handled in the architectural program, and represent them in few nodes, each node has its coordinates and field of influence (Volume), such parameters are the force to design and identify the optimum position “from performance point of view” of each node. But what about function!
Having a parametric performance based proposal “Formative layout and masses” without putting into confederation many environmental issues which could change the morphology totally is a fatal mistake, and to overcome being so, a layering phase between the results of computational design and the functional and environmental issues is done. The final morphology was born!

Performance Driven Design Process

  1. Summarizing our design program to our main nodes based on its level of crowd, and distribute them after intersecting this layer with the architectural layer
  2. Giving each node a field of influence, which increase or decreases with respect to the node expected population at the events.
  3. Adding a direction to such field “clockwise or anticlockwise” to add the factor of field of flow of the spectators around the architectural mass
  4. Dividing such field circles into many points which represent the flow of spectators movement field lines
  5. Merging all nodes field to get the resultant of the flow field and have the final layout morphology
  6. Trials to have the optimum layout morphology through intersecting the final parametric layer with the functional layer which results through achieving the best orientation and functional issues to all venues nodes

Project goal is to generate a flexible layout which has a compatibility with any location in Egypt, and being a visionary Olympic city, the flexibility would enhance the opportunity for sport venues to be attached or be stand alone in the future.
To get certified and to have a real national project, a candidate file for Olympics 2028 is prepared, to clarify all project phases and issues related to the market. Egypt 2028
