Contemporary Museum – Art, Tirana |Ives Durmishi, Olsi Pere

This museum is located in the north side of Tirana, close to Paskuqan county. This project was started as it was need due to the fact that the city is lacking a museum of such a kind. In 2012 the race for the new city’s boulevard project started, with the Grimshaw Architects Studio as the winner of the contest and this building will be stationed at the end of the boulevard.

Concept
The form of this object is linear, respecting the context of the boulevard itself, and undergoes an increase in height as the result of the collision of this axe with the object. Town fragments with this object and this is reflected towards the city in the same way (as a Hilltop hostage for the balcony of Tirana). The main volume serves as a museum, and to this main volume are added two supporting volumes, which also function as such. For the light to come in are used small openings, on the side of the hall, and bigger openings from above, as the museum is in need of the diffusion of lights from the above. On the outer side is proposed a monument as a representation of the city of Tirana, and whole Albania. It is located on the end of the new boulevard’s new axe.

Ground floor.
On the ground floor is place the main hall, together with a conference room, the library, the administration offices, the laboratories and a restaurant. The visitors have two options of movement, two different itineraries, one on the north side and the other to the south. Priority is given to disabled people in the southern part of the museum with serve steep ramps and elevators to move, and in the northern part only lifts.
First floor.
On the southern part of the museum are located the exposition halls which are realized in the form of the balconies since it is the most spacious space, while in the northern side are placed the gallery rooms, since those are more closed following the directions from the manual.
Second floor.
It serves like a museum
The third and the fourth floor.
Except the function as a museum, in the northern part of the third floor you have the option of going out on the terrace, which offers a wonderful view of the town.
Constructions and facades
The building is constructed with concrete, with a console of 30 meters on the front part and one of around 10 meters on the back. The main purpose of this construction is to balance the forces of the consoles in the center of the building, which counterweight each other, making a strong structure in the center.
The main concept of the facades is the use of small openings or windows making the light enter in a diffuse way and showing on the outside the function of the building itself. Most of the openings are used on the hall. On the top of the building are used bigger openings as the main source of light.
