Asymptote

Evelyn Bencicove has made modern and brutalist architecture her photographic playground depicting people in odd poses to intrigue the viewer. Currently studying in Vienna the 22 year old Slovakian photographer is pursing the point where the commercial and artistic world meet in here series of photographs asymptote 1 and 2.

The objective of these photos is to merge the artistic with the commercial creating a contrast with the light as well of the as the subject. Each of here scenes utilizes a very brutalist style of architecture which is an appropriate setting for the representation of the commercial world while the contrasting people pose in artful ways. This intrigues the eye due to the contrast between place and action while sending a strong message.

Bringing to light the affects that a working culture can induce, there is a very strong idea of conformity, exhaustion, and  within her photographs showing multiple people in the same poses or through repetitive image such as the faces seen in the photo above representing the pressure to conformity in a work and social setting.

Age is also a theme within her subject matter. Showing older people as the subject seemingly in fun atmosphere. Creating a scene depicting the idea that people spend their formative years acting out menial task for the benefit of someone else. While once the worker retires they are too exhausted to enjoy the years following. Take for example the photo of the old women in the red party hat. She is in a very muted and stark setting with a solum expression the the element that sticks out the most is the red party hat which attracts the eye and evokes a sense of a party. Overall representing the toll that a working culture can have on an individual.
