A Lamp illuminates by Bacteria | Cédric Bernard

It is a new kind of lamp system created by the French designer Cédric Bernard , it is a part of ‘The Microbial Home: a Philips Design Probe’ project. This lamp produces organic light from luminescence bacteria. Those bacteria are generated by the MH kitchen’s bio that is a digester unit from composted bathroom solids and kitchen vegetable waste, and they are piped in through thin silicon tubes connected to a reservoir at the base.

The designer said: The concept explores the use of bio-luminescent bacteria fed with methane and composted material (drawn from the Bio-digester above). Alternatively the cellular light array can be filled with fluorescent proteins that emit different frequencies of light.
